Lg 27md5k Ips 5k Monitor For Mac
Just joined to say that I received mine today (x2)!! - I ordered literally within seconds of them going on sale (estimated delivery 28-30 December). I received a shipping email out of the blue yesterday afternoon (22 Dec) and they were delivered today (UK Mail). The delivery originated in Hinckley (GB). I've used Apple Thunderbolt displays for a few years and I must say these LG 5Ks are awesome! - very bright, incredibly sharp and worked flawlessly out of the box (just like an Apple product!).
It works fine with the Belkin Ethernet adapter plugged into the back of the display. One caveat to mention - Of the two I ordered, the first one I set up didn't work properly; the LG screen wouldn't display an image despite powering my MBP with the supplied Thunderbolt 3 cable.
Also the MBP screen kept flicking on and off (as if trying to change resolution?). Because i'd ordered two I quickly realised that one of them has a duff Thunderbolt 3 cable. After a chat with Apple Support i've made a Genius appointment to switch over the cable - so all will be good. I did consider asking in store to swap the LG supplied TB3 cable for a Belkin 2m one as carried in Apple Stores, but then realised that this only allows 60w and not the 85w that the LG 5k can push to the MBP. I hope this info proves useful to anyone else who finds themselves in this situation!

Although there's been a lot of negativity around the 'forehead' on this display and the cheap look compared to the Apple Thunderbolt display, I think that with the black surround it's less visually 'obtrusive' than the TB Display and lets you focus more easily on the (gorgeous) screen.
Another thing to mention - there's an Application you can download called LG Screen Manager which facilitates software updates for the monitor and splitting the screen (bit like split screen on an iPad). I think the screen works without it though. Yep, it arrived exactly the same time as my MBP (DHL and DPD) how weird was that!? I've spent a couple of hours setting it all up and have to say the display itself is stunning. However I'm still a bit peed that there is no headphone out (so I will have to waste one usb-c port for that) and I am not fussed on the built in speakers, and didn't really want/need a camera (which I will cover up!). I also wish it went lower in the stand so that I could angle it upwards as that's what I've always done with my Dells.
The display itself is stunning, but there seems to be a lack of thought into a few of the other things. I'll post an update and photos later.

First impressions are that the speakers are quite average, I was expecting something more akin to iMac, but seemed to lack the clarity of the iMac speakers (I suppose they benefit a lot from Apple's case design).
Other first impressions are a simply stunning display, an enlarged version of the new MacBook Pros in every way (p3colour, 220ppi, 500nits). I'm sure this will be the panel for next years iMac. The design and feel of the display is better than I expected. The cables (power and tb3) feel like they might have been manufactured by Apple? The metal stand adds some robustness to the product.
But industrial design is lacking compared to my old 30 inch Cinema Display that now sits beside it. But still the LG fades away as an object once that screen is shining! Hey we got featured on the front page - your photo got included too I feel a bit bad now, hope I didn't come across as too critical - the main thing about the display, the display itself, is amazing. I also love the fact we can control brightness through keyboard in clamshell mode and I love the 3 usb-c ports on the back. There's only really two maybe three things I wish were different: - Headphone out (to connect to an amp) - Sacrifice camera for thinner top bezel - though I don't mind it. Not sure if this would have been possible, but a HDMI in (for a PS4 PRO was 4K) would have been amazing! I originally bought this display to 'try out', but right now, I don't want to send it back!!
It's that good. I'm sure those screens are amazing! A must-have addition to the new MBP! I would love to have them as well. But when I tried to order at the first moment the sale started, Apple Switzerland removed the product because LG forgot that Switzerland has a different power plug and didn't provide a correct one. I have dozens of those cables at home but no, Apple decided to remove the product so I was not able to order. Instead of having them now as well, I need to wait god knows how long because we still can't order in Switzerland.
This is truly the biggest f.ck up for Swiss customers.
No one can responsibly buy one of these without seeing it in a store. It wobbles if you breathe on it. I've seen better constructed stands on $180 monitors. This was not a one-off abused floor sample. Many reviews say the same thing.
This monitor only has a single input. That was also a deal-breaker for me; I maintain other machines. I'm buying the just-released LG 32UL950-W 4K monitor at this same price.
My one reasonable fear, having seen that LG can sometimes build junk, is that this will also have a wobbly stand. Some LG stands are fine; I'm playing Russian Roulette. This monitor is gorgeous! I have the newer 27MD5KB-B ('business line' model with the three year warranty, not purchased from Apple), and it works flawlessly with my 13' 2018 TB Macbook Pro (Mojave 10.14.1).
Connects reliably everytime, and the display resolution, brightness, contrast and quality is as good as the 5k iMac I have at home, with slightly less reflection. Speakers aren't quite as good as those in the Apple TB display this replaced, but they're fine for conference calls and music while working. The camera is very high resolution (1080) and works perfectly too. Keyboard volume and brightness controls work seamlessly on the monitor. Granted the aesthetics of the monitor aren't quite as cool as Apple's products, but it looks better in person than in pictures.
It has a nice matte black finish and the bezels don't seem as big as you might think. This monitor may have had a tough start, but it's working great for me! 12 of 16 people found this useful. Six weeks ago, I bought the top of the line 13in-MacBook Pro, a Blackmagic eGPU, and the LG UltraFine 5K Display. Two days ago, the monitor went blank, so I contacted customer service. The call lasted over one hour, and we tried all possible combinations to fix the problem but eventually we gave up. After that I did a careful internet search and I was surprised by the large number of people having similar problems.
I hope that I can fix the problem soon by going to the Apple store but I suggest that you avoid this pain. 15 of 16 people found this useful.
Own a Late 2014 Mac mini using a Asus 2540x1440 display. Hated the picture quality and sound. Forcing to invest on a pair of external speakers, taking desk space.
During the spring, while visiting the Santa Barbara Apple Store, noticed a LG UltraFine 5K Display being hooked up to a Mac mini and was very surprise. Asked if the Mac mini will be able to drive the LG. The answer was, 'We'll see.' Man, did it drive it. Even the Apple tech was surprised at the picture quality and sound coming out of this set-up. Right there and then, my thoughts was, 'I want one!'
Well, it took a few months, but I finally have it and it meets all my needs and expectations. Outstanding display.
Lg 27md5k Ips 5k Monitor For Macbook Pro
The picture and sounds are both outstanding. The speed of moving data onto my external hard devices are just unbelievable.
That's using the Thunderbolt 2 that the Mac mini provides. Can't wait for the new 2018 Mac mini with Thunderbolt 3 that HOPEFULLY will be coming out next week! Honestly, if the new 2018 Mac mini is NOT a giant leap, I may just keep my $$$ and stay with this set-up because how satisfied I am. 6 of 7 people found this useful.
I would love to say I love my LG monitor - the picture quality is amazing! However, mine appears to have a major flaw and I'm not sure if others are experiencing the same thing. Since installing my monitor next to my MacBook Pro I've been having increasing internet connection problems with my internet freezing. I've been blaming BT and my ISP.
I upgraded my router and even tried changing channels on my router and multiple other 'fixes'. Nothing worked and the problems grew progressively worse until it's reached a point where I couldn't work! But here's the weird thing - I realised that the connection problems were isolated to my home office. So I started investigating further. And here's the really weird thing - if I turn off the LG monitor, my internet connection problems are instantly resolved. Nothing else impacts performance - but the second I turn my monitor on, internet crashes. Online support were of no help and just said I'd need to take my MacBook Pro and screen a Genius Bar.
It'll be interesting to see what happens. 8 of 10 people found this useful. So many bad reviews I thought I would share. Bought this to work with my 2018 15' MBP. I am mostly running MATLAB for data analysis and software development, and Office365 for scientific papers and presentations.
So far works nearly flawlessly. Occasionally a flash when the signal to the monitor seems to be momentarily interrupted - an off/on. I attribute this to software processing on the MBP and/or the Blackmagic eGPU. Absolutely the best image quality I have ever had. Expensive, yes, but I am much more productive using this ONE monitor alone than I am with 15' Retina display or 2016 iMac + Dell 4K. I actually see things in graphs and images I never saw before.
For me at least worth the cost because of increased productivity. 16 of 17 people found this useful. Picked it up from the Apple Store today. I have the latest 15' MBP, the maxed-out version with i9 and 32gb ram. Pulled it out of the box, plugged it in.my computer was sleeping and it immediately snapped on and has worked absolutely flawlessly in every way ever since. Beautiful picture and extremely simple to use for its primary function, which is what I expect from any Apple product so I'm glad this monitor from LG delivers there.
I'm a software developer by trade and I just had a very productive 8 hour work session on this monitor. I did not experience any drop-outs, interference (I have some high-end audio gear right near the monitor and no issues so far), or light/dark problems like others mentioned (reading documentation on a light background and swiping over to my IDE with a dark background, it works as expected). I've gone through so many different monitors-the Apple Thunderbolt monitor, a pair of Dell 4K 24' monitors, and a BenQ 32' design monitor. I already love this one more than any of those because it's the perfect size and resolution and fits in really well as an addition to the 2018 MBP. I'm guessing LG worked out whatever issues the other people here were dealing with, or maybe it wasn't the monitor. 7 of 7 people found this useful. I've got two of these displays hooked up to my MacBook Pro and have liked them a lot until recently.
I've begun to notice that if you have the brightness cranked up (I keep mine at max) and use a white window, you will get a burn-in/memory effect that can last minutes if you quickly switch to a dark display. I use multiple desktops (different VMs) that I will swap back and forth between, to keep them separate, I have different backgrounds (some very dark) and I will see a residual effect from bright windows LONG after swapping desktops. It's become HIGHLY annoying. 5 of 6 people found this useful. Bought July 30th, and didn't use it for the first two weeks.
Now that I have been using it for the last two weeks, it has blanked out on me 5 times. It's getting more and more frequent. There is no power button on this so you can't power it on and off, the only choice is to pull out the plug and hope that causes it to flicker back on. I thought it was only when the computer went to sleep, but now it just happens while working. Apple top tech suggest shutting down the computer to get it to work every night, LG tech suggests change the power outlet it was plugged into.
Don't buy this monitor. This or the B version.
LG tech support is a joke. Run away Run away. Mine is going back today. 16 of 19 people found this useful.
Pros Works fine for me. Connected to touchbar Macbook Pro. Great to have the high resolution (I have 5K) screen. Vertical position adjustment (a feature which is not important to me, but am including for completeness). Cons Wobbles. Whenever I bump my desk, the display wobbles and takes about 6 seconds to damp out and stop.
Very annoying. Never had this problem with Apple displays (same desk).
Horizontal tilt alignment. Yes, you can adjust, but a solid stand would solve the problem with zero user participation. Again, Apple stands are better on this. Edge to edge glass Apple display cleaner.
Hard to move from side to side to point screen sideways to adjust pointing or show displayed content to others. Easy to do with Apple displays. Summary I held off getting this, waiting for an Apple design alternative, but finally gave up, suspecting Apple/LG arrangements limited customers to this LG version. Nice screen display, but wish Apple had continued the Apple display tradition for its superior mount. Display wobble continues to be annoying.
2 of 2 people found this useful. I am not sure why all the negative reviews, I can only attribute it to user error or other hardware issues not related to the monitor. I have it hooked up to my Mac Pro. It's amazing compared to the Apple branded monitor. The picture is so unreal.
I hooked it up to my MacBook Pro, no issues there neither. I am running the latest version of MacOS. If you want a the best monitor on the market, don't hesitate in buying this monitor. Don't pay no attention to the negative reviews. You have to tweak the monitor, you have to set it as your primary screen, etc.it's not a monitor issues, it's a user issue. So rest assured, this monitor is the tops of the tops.but do yourself a favor, buy it open box somewhere and save a few hundred.great monitor.
In fact, I am searching for my 2nd one currently. 10 of 12 people found this useful. Once I finally got it working, it seems to work quite well, but I had a heck of a time getting it set up. The 'plug and play' feature isn't quite true, there is a key setting you need to configure before it will work properly. I'm sure experienced macophiles would know it intuitively, but it took me quite a while to figure it out. When I first plugged it in I was quite frustrated because it displayed my background screen but none of my active windows, and the menu bar at the top of the screen was grayed out.
I discovered quite by accident that if I set my display to 'airstream' to AppleTV it would magically also display on the LG, but that was quite odd and as long as I was using it I couldn't watch Apple TV. Plus there seemed to be a weird delay if I was trying to make a video conference call, as it seemed to be going from my laptop to my appleTV to my monitor.
In desperation, I started clicking on every option everywhere on my system preferences. I discovered that there is a tab under display called 'Arrangement.' Under 'Arrangement' was a check box under 'Mirror Displays.' After clicking that, the monitor immediately popped up and all was well.
I'm sure this was obvious to many people, but to me it was a headscratcher, and even calling Apple Support didn't help, as it didn't occur to any of them, either. So, if you buy this, just be aware that plugging it in will not alone make it function. You need to go to System Preferences/Display/Arrangement/Mirror Displays. There are no instructions provided anywhere with the monitor or online either at the apple site or the LG site other than 'plug and play,' so knowing this is quite helpful. That's one heck of a non-intuitive command.
